  • 14 October – At the Battle of HastingsWilliam the Conqueror (Duke of Normandy) defeats Harold. Harold is killed. In England, this heralds the start of the Middle Ages.
  • The Viking port of Hedeby, a town on the Baltic Sea, is destroyed by Slavs.
